"Dujon, What's Your Skincare Routine?"
Founder & CEO of My Block Skin
When I first came across My Block Skin, I knew it wasn’t just another sunscreen brand. It was a product rooted in culture, intention, and genuine care for Black and brown skin. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to speak with Dujon, the founder of My Block Skin, about SPF, skincare myths in our community, and reimagining self-care within modern masculinity. I hope this conversation offers a fresh perspective on why SPF matters—not just for you, but for our community as a whole.
Skincare Routine & History
Toluwani: What does your current skincare routine look like?
Dujon: Right now, my routine is pretty simple but consistent:
Cleanser: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Toner: Aesop Toner
Toluwani: Have you always been consistent with SPF, or was there a turning point that made you prioritize it?
Dujon: I haven’t always been consistent with SPF, to be honest. The turning point came after I saw the study showing that Black men have the lowest five-year survival rate for melanoma—just 51.7%, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. That really stuck with me. It pushed me to take SPF seriously, not just for myself but for our community.
Toluwani: How do you personally define skincare and how has that definition evolved for you over time?
Dujon: Skincare, for me, used to just mean “don’t be ashy.” Now it’s about long-term health, confidence, and care. It’s less about looking good for others and more about showing up for myself in the mirror every day.
Myths About Melanin & Sunscreen
Toluwani: What misconceptions do you think still exist around sunscreen and melanin-rich skin?
Dujon: The biggest misconception is that melanin is enough. Yes, we have some natural protection, but it’s not armor. UV damage still happens—just more silently. And because we don’t always think we’re at risk, diagnoses often come too late. We also still battle the idea that sunscreen leaves a white cast, which is why I was so focused on a clear formula with My Block Skin.
Toluwani: What kind of reactions or feedback have you received from Black and brown men using your sunscreen?
Dujon: Honestly, the feedback has been emotional at times. Guys are saying it’s the first time they’ve felt seen by a skincare brand—especially in the SPF space. A lot of them say they finally feel comfortable wearing sunscreen daily because it doesn’t leave residue and it feels like it was made for them.
Toluwani: Were there any gaps in the sunscreen or broader skincare market that you felt weren’t being addressed?
Dujon: Absolutely. There was a massive gap in products that work and feel culturally relevant. Most sunscreens either didn’t work well for deeper skin tones or weren’t marketed to us at all. It wasn’t just about the formula—it was about representation and language, too.
Redefining Skincare & Shaping Culture
Toluwani: How do you see masculinity and self-care coexisting, and how does My Block Skin help reframe that relationship?
Dujon: I think masculinity is evolving, and part of that is embracing self-care without shame. My Block Skin helps reframe that by being bold, clear, and rooted in culture. We don’t present skincare as vanity—we present it as legacy. As protection. As a form of pride.
Toluwani: Do you see your brand as part of a larger cultural shift? If so, what changes are you hoping to help push forward?
Dujon: Yes, we’re part of a wave that’s redefining beauty, health, and self-care for people of color—especially men. I want to help normalize sunscreen use and show that looking after your skin isn’t just okay, it’s essential. I also want to push for more equity in product development and representation in the beauty space.
Get To Know My Block Skin
Toluwani: How did you approach formulating your sunscreen? What were your non-negotiables when developing the product?
Dujon: Non-negotiables: No white cast, no heavy residue, broad-spectrum SPF 50, and clean ingredients that don’t irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin. I also wanted it to feel luxe but accessible—something you’re proud to use and display.
Toluwani: What’s next for My Block Skin?
Dujon: We’re building on the momentum from our Boots launch and expanding our retail footprint across the UK and into the US. We’re also working on some new formats and product categories, but always keeping sun protection at the core.
Final Thoughts
Toluwani: Lastly, what’s one thing you wish more people knew about sun protection for people of color?
Dujon: That melanin doesn’t make you immune. Sun protection is not optional—it’s life-saving. We deserve products that work for us and messaging that speaks to us, not around us.
